One of the Romero family of guitarists, Pepe is a super virtuoso player with a piercing tone, a stinging attack, and an unstoppable feeling for rhythm. Joining him here are three performers so deep into the Flamenco tradition that they are indivisible from it: singer Chano Lobato plus dancers Maria Magdalena and Paco Romero. Together they turn in performances that are likely to stand as definitive. The combination of Lobato’s strong, sweet voice; Magdalena and Paco’s stamping, flashing percussion obligato, and Pepe’s bone-deep identification with the music is intoxicating, and anyone even remotely interested in the music is urged to try this disc. A final note on the recorded sound is called for: when it was originally recorded and released on Philips in 1987, the disc’s sound was clean, vivid, and colorful. Remastered here for Linn by Winston Ma, the disc’s sound is translucent, essentially placing the performers directly in front of the listener. Nuevo flamenco (as opposed to traditional flamenco) is Cortes’ focus on Flamenco Soul, which combines flamenco with elements of jazz and funk as well as various forms of world music. Cortes does things that a flamenco purist would never do. A flamenco purist would never lead a band that employs someone on the Indian sitar, and a flamenco purist would not be heavily influenced by jazz (a type of music that was created in New Orleans — not Spain — in the late 19th century). But this 2002 release is captivating if you are a nuevo flamenco enthusiast and believe that flamenco needs to forge ahead and keep evolving. Over the years, flamenco has influenced various jazz artists — Miles Davis’ Sketches of Spain went down in history as one of the best jazz albums of all time, and flamenco has been a big influence on Chick Corea and Al DiMeola. In fact, much of Flamenco Soul gives the impression that Cortes is well aware of Corea and DiMeola’s contributions to jazz (both inside and outside of Return to Forever). Flamenco Soul also shows a strong awareness of Arabic, Middle Eastern, and North African music; one of the instruments is the oud, a traditional Arabic lute. And that isn’t surprising because Arabic music has been influencing Spanish music for centuries; the influence of the Moors has never left Spain. What is surprising — pleasantly surprising — is Cortes’ use of a sitar player. Gypsy Flamenco $11.98 An interesting group of flamenco musicians, Grupo Macarena actually hail from outside of Iberia. There are Germans and Turks as well as French and Spanish performers in the collective. Here, they show off something interesting in flamenco — both major regions of influence. The main vein of flamenco of course comes from Andalucia, with the stereotypical heart-rending songs and palmas. That’s represented with approximately half of the album here, and performed relatively well. The group’s specialty, though, is in flamenco from the Camargue — a rhumba flamenco from the south of France. This is the style made famous around the world by the Gipsy Kings, and indeed the lead singer here worked with them for some time prior to their rise on the world scene. The sound here is unmistakable, having the “fleet-footed” tempo and guitar work along with some intense vocals. For Andalucian flamenco, there are many better artists and albums out there, but for the Camargue, the only real competition to this album comes from the Gipsy Kings themselves (and perhaps Los Reyes). Flamenco Arabe $11.98 An interesting fusion between Arabic music and flamenco. Though it’s been done before (by Al Tall and Muluk el-Hwa), it’s an enticing sort of fusion to listen to again. Some of the pieces are most straightforward flamenco with some additional Egyptian percussion, thanks to Hossam Ramzy. In other parts, it reverts to a straightforward Egyptian dance rhythm with some careful Spanish guitar in the background. It’s when the two mesh that the sound is something worth hearing. Despite the relative obscurity of Rafa Tachuela (actually a German flamenco artist, hence the obscurity), the skill is certainly present to power the music forward. There is some able help from Said Kamal and Mohamed Naiem, providing the Egyptian sounds beyond Ramzy’s percussion, and in the end, some help from the Sabri brothers (sons of Sabri Khan, not to be confused with the qawwal duo of the same name) in the addition of a touch of Indian music, as the artists attempt to explore the roots of flamenco through Egyptian music and the roots of Egyptian music through its Indian forebearers. Given that the rise of flamenco came after the Iberian peninsula had been taken over by the Moors, the links between North African music and flamenco are somewhat expected. When the two forms are brought back together to play in tandem, though, something more than the sum of its parts emerges. Nouveau Flamenco $11.18 Almost overnight, the success of Ottmar Liebert’s groundbreaking 1990 debut Nouveau Flamenco catapulted Higher Octave Music into one of the industry’s top indie labels and introduced the instrumental world to a fresh, exotic sound unlike any other. Quickly hitting the pole position on Billboard’s new age chart, the album took the world by storm. In the U.S. it was certified gold in 1993 and platinum in 1997, while achieving gold status in Canada and Mexico and platinum status in New Zealand and Australia. More than a simple repackaging of its best-selling release of all time, Higher Octave’s re-release of the Nouveau Flamenco 1990-2000 Special Edition is a true treasure featuring vibrant new mixes of all the original tracks as well as six previously unreleased songs recorded before or during the original sessions. Though he has gone on to build an amazing catalog with Epic Records, Liebert’s love for Nouveau Flamenco ensured his personal involvement in the new release. Gary Lyons, who engineered the guitarist’s previous three albums, was hired to remix the old tracks and copy the songs from the original primitive 1/2″ tapes they were on to 2″ tapes. Liebert also got great joy out of rediscovering three songs that didn’t make the original release, and three more that he recorded just prior to the Nouveau Flamenco project.
