Which Guitar to use for Guitar Playing Lessons?
When you start looking for a guitar for your Guitar Lessons you will find there are three main types. They are Classical Acoustic, Acoustic, and Electric.
If you are borrowing a guitar to get started with your first guitar playing lessons, then there’s a good chance that it’s an old classical acoustic guitar or possibly a steel string acoustic.
The acoustic guitar is great to learn on, the only accessory you need is a pick. Electric Guitars need a more complex setup with leads, amps, speaker and power.
Acoustic guitars are good in that you can’t increase the volume. While first learning you only want your sound to be loud enought to hear what you are playing, both errors and good performances.
If you don’t know which types of guitar you want to play on, ask yourself, ‘what kind of music do I want to play?’
Find a song with guitar playing that you really like. Listen to the guitar sounds and only the guitar sounds. Are they clean, soft sounds? Or do they sound distorted, harsh or heavy? Compared to the electric guitar, the acoustic will mostly have a softer, clearer tone. Electric guitars are boosted by amplifiers and other special effects that cause their sound to become heavy and distorted. Can you hear individual notes being picked or are the strings being strummed hard? The harder you play, the thicker your strings need to be. You need to know what style you want to play.
OK you have found a style of music that you like. Try and find out what the band video for that song is and watch it. See if you can find the clearest part to view the band. Check out the guitarist. Which guitar is being used by the guitarist, electric guitar or acoustic guitar? What brand is it? What style? If you can identify the precise guitar from the clip, then when you go to your local guitar shop ask if you can play it to see if it suits you.
Folks learn to play guitar and take guitar lessons for a variety of reasons. Once you know what you want from your guitar, then most of these decisions will beome simple To discover your tastes in guitar music, listening to different styles and genres. Ask musicians at music shops about what kind of guitars different bands use, or ask them what kind of amps/effects those artists use to get that sound.
The answers don’t have to be exact because they will get you thinking about what you need to buy to achieve the sound you are after.
The best way is to borrow the basic acoustic guitar from a friend, take some Online Guitar playing lessons, take notice of what music you like to tune in on, and to play yourself and then use that time to arrive at a conclusion what type of guitar will suit you.

Immortality Lessons $9.58 Glenn Jones’ liner notes for this release make it perfectly clear that at the time of recording, the bandmembers thought they had done one of the worst shows of their career. The occasion for this particular performance was a radio station gig at Brandeis University in the summer of 1999, and Jones details everything from a generally bad mood to lack of soundchecks and interband tensions as contributing to the “whole miserable experience. “As it turned out from listening to the tapes later, Jones and company felt that in fact they had not only played one of the best shows ever, but that the station staff had captured their sound to a T. It’s neither boasting nor idle praise; Immortality Lessons is a fantastically fine album, readily capturing the inventive blend of styles and approaches which made the band one of America’s best art-psych groups in the ’90s and beyond. Perhaps above all else it’s the sense of silence and careful playing that the foursome bring which is so striking here — consider the extremely subdued but not absent drumming on Proudman’s own composition here, the brief “Enhoft Down,” or the understated drive and ghostly synth that makes up Bloom’s own contribution, “Tartarugas.” “The Dragonfly’s Bright Eye,” one of two tracks that top ten minutes (the other being the excellent zoneout “Blues in E”), is a great showcase for both how the performers work together and how they can still showcase their own abilities just so. “Immortality Lessons” itself was originally written for the sessions with John Fahey but never released; as heard here, it’s quite fine, Jones’ guitar swooping along while Amos proceeds to go happily nuts on his keyboards and the rhythm section fluidly slips from keeping the beat to freaking out as needed. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi Performers: Glenn Jones – Bouzouki, Electronics, Guitar; Robin Amos – Autoharp, Sampling, Synthesizer; Jon Proudman – Drums; Michael Bloom – Bass |

Lessons in Living $10.38 Recorded in a live setting in 1982 — the same year as his Middle Class White Boy album — Lessons in Living is a mixed bag. The material is terrific, and Mose Allison is in typically fine form. The issue lies more with the “all-star” band assembled for the date: bassist Jack Bruce, drummer Billy Cobham, and soloists Eric Gale (guitarist) and Lou Donaldson ( alto saxophonist). For starters, Allison didn’t need a large band –or any band, really — to shine. Though he had been absent from the recording scene for six years until that point, he had continued to perform live and his chops as both a pianist and a singer are stellar. These players, fine as they are, don’t seem to understand the subtler kind of magic that Allison puts across in a club setting, and don’t know how to lay back enough — this is particularly the case with Cobham, who is overly busy throughout the date, double-timing already fast tunes like “Wild Man in the Street.” Bruce, playing electric bass, has a wonderful facility to move and shift gears with the pianist, but still feels a shade behind Cobham’s fast and furious beat — the overdriven “Your Mind Is on Vacation” is a case in point. That said, Allison feels like he is having the time of his life. Donaldson’s solo on “You Are My Sunshine” is stirring and raw, something that feels jarring at first with the wonderfully relaxed groove of Allison’s arrangement, but fits like a glove after a chorus. The stomping pace of Willie Dixon’s “Seventh Son” is a highlight on the set with Cobham lightening his touch a bit and Allison’s vocal is swaggering and tough. The laid-back blues of “Everybody Is Crying Mercy” is another gem, with the band holding Allison’s blues loose and easy. Lessons in Living is basically for Allison devotees, but it has fantastic moments. First Lessons Banjo [With CD] $10.98 First Lessons on Banjo is an ultra-easy instruction manual for beginning five-string banjo played in the three finger style in G tuning. It can be used by those with no previous experience with the banjo or music of any sort. It is so basic it can be used even by small children. The book features very detailed descriptions of even the most basic aspects such as wearing the picks properly, the correct picking motion, and noting the strings properly. These are aspects that are so basic most manuals skip over them. There are many detailed photos, several from the player’s point of view, not from in front of the banjo. First Lessons on Banjo covers the most basic rolls, the Alternating Thumb Roll and two Forward Rolls, plus the three basic chords plus the relative minor chord. All musical examples are presented in tablature, with the melody notes in boldface type so the student knows which notes to emphasize. All arrangements include lyrics, which is very important to the novice who is trying to train the ear to hear the melody among the fill notes. Several tips and suggestions about the proper mental approach are included that will lead to playing by ear and arranging at an earlier stage in the student’s development. There are also suggestions about developing the proper mental approach and about speed reading of tablature. These suggestions are not found in any other banjo instruction book. The ‘finale’ arrangement is Cripple Creek, a popular banjo standard that when mastered, should give the novice a great sense of accomplishment. The accompanying recording includes all tabbed examples, with the rhythm instruments and lead banjo in separate channels. The songs are played at three tempos, the first tempo VERY slow, then a medium tempo version, and finally at performing speed with guitar, mandolin and bass accompaniment. The up- tempo accompanied versions are all together at the end of the recording so it the final tracks be used as a listening recording. This also allows the student to play along with all the more interesting arrangements in sequence without skipping around the recording. |

Elegies to Lessons Learnt $13.59 Sometimes the album’s name is a dead giveaway for the sound within, and it’s certainly true in case of Elegies to Lessons Learnt, which plays like a soundtrack for an intense brooding session. The record is made of ponderously slow rhythms and sparse guitar lines so hypnotic that their gloomy mood is almost hard to notice. The textures swirling in the background multiply and coalesce into the occasional wall of sound, bolstered by pianos, choruses, and strings, but getting there takes patience; meanwhile, the deep and well-articulated but emotionless vocals hover above the fuss, reciting obscure phrases like “Hold back the cavalry” over and over. It’s as if the band roped in the disembodied soul of Jim Morrison for the record. If this all sounds like a Post-Rock 101 course as taught by Arab Strap members, well, there’s that, but iLiKETRAiNS are at least good enough to have too many influences and avoid sounding like anyone in particular. The songs begin with a Gravenhurst-styled folk-rock drone, plod to psychedelic soundscapes of Isis (not the “end of the world” ones, but those “post-apocalyptic evening drizzle” moments), and culminate in several Godspeed You Black Emperor! spikes. A seamless construction, but not a perfect one: for all the intensity and elaborate song movements, Elegies to Lessons Learnt is short on tension release. The album can be quiet, taut, or dramatic, but it always sounds as if the band is repressing the hysteria, trying to hide it under epic melancholy but not getting away with it. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it limits the record’s use: while much post-rock stuff is good for many kinds of dreaming, Elegies to Lessons Learnt requires the listener to be in a specific mood — a grim and, indeed, brooding one — to make an emotional connection.
