Private Tutoring – Why Find A Private Tutor?
Hiring a private tutor was once the preserve of the wealthy few. Today, private tutoring is a service available far more widely than ever before. People seeking private tutors have greater choices and personalized help is available for learners in a huge range of subjects.
Private tutoring can consist of a specialist tutor attending the learner’s home. With the growth of the internet and high speed broadband, private tutoring is also available online. Some private tutors use a combination of individualized tutoring given at the student’s home (or any other mutually agreed location) as well as the possibilities that online learning offers.
Why find a private tutor?
Schools, colleges and universities by definition teach groups. Sometimes it’s individual attention that really makes the difference. Private tutoring on a one-to-one basic can make the difference between a passing and a failing grade. It can also be the difference between an A+ and a B for scholars and students whose careers may depend on the outcome.
The power of one-to-one tutoring, which is the foundation of most private tutoring, should never be underestimated. Sometimes the relationship between the learner and the teacher is of paramount importance.
It’s not hard to see why private tutoring can be so effective. An experienced tutor will be able to identify where a student has knowledge gaps or difficulties working with the material. The private tutoring sessions can then be targeted directly at the problem areas.
Private tutoring that takes place in the learner’s home can be especially useful for children and younger learners. The rise of online tutoring has brought help and improvement to millions, but for some students and subjects the physical presence of a teacher or tutor is important.
Private tutoring in the home is perfect when help is needed with practical subjects (such as playing a musical instrument). For children with concentration or attention issues, or those who need firm supervision and feedback to keep them motivated, a private tutor attending at the home is the ideal solution.
Private tutoring online
If you live in a cosmopolitan area or city, you are likely to be able to find private tutoring in almost any subject of your choice. For the many millions who don’t, private tutoring over the internet can be a lifeline. As long as you have a reasonably fast broadband connection, geography is no barrier to online tutorials and individual coaching.
Cutting out the commuting means that private tutoring online is an affordable option too. If there is a down side to private tutoring online, it is that establishing the interpersonal rapport that aids learning can be a bit more difficult. This partly accounts for the higher drop-out rate in online private tutoring. However, motivated learners and committed tutors can beat this problem together.
From homework help to more specialized subject coaching or test prep, private tutoring can make a big difference to educational and career outcomes. In a competitive world where qualifications and achievement count, private tutoring is an option well worth considering.

Atheist Victims of Soviet Repressions: Isaak Babel, Nikolai Krylenko, Stanislav Kosior $9.53 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Isaak Emmanuilovich Babel (Russian: , 13 July 1894 January 27, 1940) was a Soviet journalist, playwright, and short story writer acclaimed as “the greatest prose writer of Russian Jewry.” Despite being an enthusiastic Communist, Isaac Babel was arrested, tortured and shot during Joseph Stalin’s Great Purge. Isaak Babel was born into a family of Manus and Feyga Bobel (Babel changed the spelling of his surname in his twenties). Manus Bobel was a Jewish shopkeeper in Odessa during a period of intermittent pogroms and mass exodus of Jews from the Russian Empire. Isaak Babel’s family survived Odessa’s 1905 pogrom with the help of Christian neighbors, but his great maternal grandfather Shoyl was one of about 300 Jews murdered. In his teens, Babel hoped to get into the preparatory class of the Nicolas I Odessa Commercial School. However, he first had to overcome the Jewish quota (10% within the Pale of Settlement, 5% outside and 3% for both capitals). Despite the fact that Babel received the passing grades, his place was given to another boy, whose parents had bribed the school officials. As a result he was schooled at home by private tutors. In addition to regular school subjects, Babel also studied the Talmud and music. According to Cynthia Ozick, “Though he was at home in Yiddish and Hebrew, and was familiar with the traditional texts and their demanding commentaries, he added to these a lifelong fascination with Maupassant and Flaubert. His first stories were composed in fluent literary French. The breadth and scope of his social compass enabled him to see through the eyes of peasants, soldiers, priests, rabbis, children, artists, actors, women of all classes. He befriended whores, cabdrivers, jockeys; he knew what it was like to be penniless, t… More: |

Fanny Mendelssohn $39.95 Fanny Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1805-1847), like her younger brother Felix, demonstrated prodigious musical talent as a child. In their youth, Fanny and Felix were inseparable friends; they encouraged each other, collaborated in musical endeavors, and received the same education and training from distinguished tutors. But as an adolescent, Fanny was told by her father that her role as a woman was to concern herself with her home and that music could be only secondary, even though she had become a remarkable pianist and composer. She married Wilhelm Hensel, a respected portrait painter who encouraged her musical talents. Fulfilling her domestic role as wife and as mother of their son, Sebastian, she continued to compose – principally lieder – and to organize concerts in her home that became an integral part of the Berlin musical scene. Her talents were warmly received during a journey to Italy, particularly by Gounod, who heard her play from memory the music of Bach, Beethoven, and Mendelssohn. At forty years of age Fanny finally went against the orders of her father and of Felix and published her compositions. She had just begun to receive critical praise when she died suddenly at the age of forty-two. Her death was a devastating blow to Felix, who survived her by barely six months. This book, originally published in French in 1992, is the first and only authoritative biography of Fanny Mendelssohn and contains a complete list of her published compositions. Set against the backdrop of a privileged life in Berlin in the early nineteenth century, Francoise Tillard’s vivid portrait describes an exceptional artist – she left behind four hundred works – who could have held her own among thegreatest if she had not been prohibited from venturing into the professional world. |

Noise from the Writing Center $19.95 In Noise from the Writing Center, Boquet develops a theory of noise and excess as an important element of difference between the pedagogy of writing centers and the academy in general. Addressing administrative issues, Boquet strains against the bean-counting anxiety that seems to drive so much of writing center administration. Pedagogically, she urges a more courageous practice, developed via metaphors of music and improvisation, and argues for noise, excess, and performance as uniquely appropriate to the education of writers and tutors in the center. Personal, even irreverent in style, Boquet is also theoretically sophisticated, and she draws from an eclectic range of work in academic and popular culture — from Foucault to Attali to Jimi Hendrix. She includes, as well, the voices of writing center tutors with whom she conducted research, and she finds some of her most inspiring moments in the words and work of those tutors. |

Performance Practices In Classic Piano Music $29.95 Performance today on either the pianoforte or the fortepiano can be at once joyful, musicianly, expressive, and historically informed. From this point of view, Sandra P. Rosenblum examines the principles of performing the music of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and their contemporaries as revealed in a variety of historical sources: their autographs and letters, early editions of their music, original instruments, and contemporary tutors and journals. She applies these findings to such elements of performance as dynamics, accentuation, pedaling, articulation and touch, technique and fingering, ornaments and embellishments, choice of tempo, and tempo flexibility.Familiarity with the Classic conventions provides a framework for interpretation and an understanding of the choices available within the style, the amount of freedom a performer has, and which areas are ambiguous. Rosenblum’s detailed study, copiously illustrated with musical examples, is invaluable for professional and amateur performers, serious piano students and their teachers and students of performance practices by Scarlatti and Clementi. “… is and will remain unsurpassed as the study dealing with performance practice as it pertains to keyboard music of the Classical period.” — American Music Teacher”Rosenblum’s monumental achievement is thorough, objective, balanced, and imaginative, a compelling blend of love and respect for the solo, chamber, and concerto literature she addresses.” — Journal of Musicological Research”The extent and quality of her research, the depth of her perception, and her musicianship together break new ground in the study of historic performance practice.” — Early Keyboard Journal”Her attention to details is absolutely scrupulous; no stone unturned, no argument unquestioned or unstated.” — The Musical Times”Its importance to thoughtful musicians cannot be overstated.” — Choice”… thoroughly musicological.” — |
